Don’t Start a Summer Road Trip Without Doing These 7 Things First

Summer road trip season is here and whether you’re heading down to the Outer Banks, out to the Blue Ridge mountains, or just escaping the DMV for a weekend, your car is about to take on a lot more than your daily commute.

Here at Metro Motor, we see it every year: long-distance trips, hot weather, and fully packed vehicles tend to expose issues drivers didn’t know were there.

The good news? Most summer breakdowns are preventable with a quick vehicle check-up before you leave. Before you hit the road, here are seven things we recommend every driver takes a look at first.

1. Tire Pressure, Wear & Safety

Your tires are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle and summer heat makes them even more vulnerable. Hot pavement and long highway drives increase tire pressure and can lead to blowouts if tires are worn or improperly inflated. A quick tire check can be the difference between a smooth drive and a roadside emergency.

Before your trip:

  • Check tire pressure (including the spare)
  • Look for uneven wear
  • Make sure tread depth is safe for highway driving

A quick tire inspection can make a huge difference when you're driving hours from home.

2. Air Conditioning (AC)

There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through a summer road trip and realizing your AC can’t keep up. If your air conditioning is weak, inconsistent, or not blowing cold, here at Metro Motor we always recommend getting it checked before you leave, not after you’re already stuck in traffic in 90° heat. Small AC issues tend to get worse quite quickly in the summer.

3. Brakes

Summer travel usually means more highway driving, stop-and-go traffic, and heavier loads, all of which put extra strain on your brakes. If you notice squeaking, grinding, or a change in how your car stops, it’s worth having them inspected by a certified mechanic before a long trip.

4. Battery Health

Most drivers think winter is hard on batteries, but here at Metro Motor, we see just as many summer battery failures. Heat accelerates battery wear, especially in older batteries or ones that are already weakening. A quick test before your trip can help prevent getting stranded far from home.

5. Fluids Under the Hood

Your engine works harder during long summer drives, especially in hot weather and traffic. Before a road trip, we always recommend checking:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant (especially important in summer heat)
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid

Proper fluid levels help your engine stay cool and perform efficiently on long drives.

6. Wipers & Visibility

Summer storms in the DMV can come out of nowhere – and when they do, visibility drops fast. At Metro Motor, we often see worn wipers that streak or skip across the windshield, making driving in heavy rain much more difficult than it needs to be. If your wipers aren’t clearing your windshield cleanly, it’s time to replace them before your trip.

Did you know?

Each year, Metro Motor hosts a community-wide safety initiative to distribute and install new windshield wipers absolutely free.

7. Lights & Emergency Basics

Before you leave, take a quick walk around your car and check:

  • Headlights
  • Brake lights
  • Turn signals
  • Hazard lights

We also recommend keeping a few basics in your car, like jumper cables, a phone charger, water, and a flashlight, just in case. A few minutes of preparation can make a huge difference if something unexpected happens.

Make your trip about the destination, not the car.

Here at Metro Motor, we believe summer road trips should be about enjoying the drive, not worrying about what might go wrong along the way. A quick pre-trip inspection can help catch small issues before they turn into bigger problems and give you peace of mind before you hit the road.
